TM201 – Overview of Technology Management

The nature, processes and dynamics of technology; technology management and competitive strategy at the firm, industry, and national levels.

Course Description: This is the beginning core course for first-year students of the Master of Technology Management (MTM) program that is designed to provide them with the conceptual gateways to the rest of the MTM courses by introducing them to the basic concepts and different aspects of technology and to the processes involved in its generation, conception, protection, incubation, transfer, commercialization, diffusion, maturation, evolution, forecast, assessment, adoption, assimilation, and mastery, while acquainting them with the principles and techniques of technology strategy and technology management at the firm level and national level.

TM 204 – Management of R&D

The systematic treatment of the various issues and factors inherent in the management of R&D; R&D strategies; measurement and assessment of R&D productivity; strategic R&D management.

Course Description: The course covers the discussion about the nature and functions of R&D in technology generation and technological innovation. It includes the methods of R&D strategizing and planning, with the techniques of valuing, selecting, organizing, and implementing R&D projects. Also discussed are the problems and techniques of organizing R&D laboratories, managing R&D personnel, and improving R&D productivity. There also exist various national R&D systems and policies as well as with the problems of R&D management in government and academe; and methods of promoting government- business-academe collaboration in R&D, stimulating R&D in the enterprise sector, and evaluating R&D performance.

TM 205 – Financial Analysis for Technology Managers

Analytical tools and techniques for the generation of financial information in aid of managerial decision-making; uses and limitations of current management accounting tools and theories for technology investment decisions.

Course Description: The course explains the role of Financial Management in today’s business environment, as well as the different financial analytical tools and techniques. Also thoroughly discussed are the relationships (and potential conflict) among different stakeholders in a business organization.

TM 206 – Technology Marketing and Commercialization

The R&D/marketing interface in technological innovation; the process of commercializing new technologies.

Course Description: This focuses on managerial issues confronting companies commercializing and marketing high technology products in emerging, turbulent and fast-paced environments The course will address the following topics:

  • Innovation and Commercialization
  • Technology opportunities and product development strategies
  • Financial and Intellectual property strategies for technology start-ups
  • Issues related toward the transition from R&D to Operations
  • various categories and patterns of innovation, and their marketing implications
  • the necessity of (and difficulties in) embracing a customer-orientation
  • techniques used to gather marketing research/intelligence in technology-driven industries
  • use of strategic alliances and partnerships in marketing technology
  • modified approach to the 4 Ps (product, place, promotions and pricing decisions); and
  • regulatory and ethical considerations in technological arenas.

TM 241 – Technology Acquisition and Assimilation

Systematic treatment of issues and problems in the selection, sourcing, transfer, and mastery of exogenous technology.

Course Description: This is a core course of the Master of Technology Management program that is designed to familiarize students with the concepts, principles, techniques, and practices of technology management related to the acquisition of technology from foreign and local sources, the implementation of the technology, the learning of the technology up to and even beyond technological catch-up, selected national models of technological learning and catch-up, and the challenges and issues facing countries that are seeking technological catch-up in the 21st century.

TM 251 – Technology-Based Entrepreneurship

Entrepreneurship and its role in fostering technology innovation; organization and financing of business ventures; social dimensions of entrepreneurship.

Course Description: The course highlights the role of technology innovation in entrepreneurship. It delves into the issues associated with the transfer of technology to new business ventures. In addition, it provides insights into the psychology of the entrepreneur, the social and legal dimensions of entrepreneurship, the models and methodologies of creating new ventures, and the internal corporate entrepreneurship.

TM 281 – Strategic Technology Planning

Framework for strategic technology planning at the firm, industry, and national levels; models and methods of technology forecasting and assessment for the formulation of a strategic technology plan.

Course Description: This course highlights how essential Technology Forecast and Technology Foresight are as planning tools and techniques in strategic planning for different technologies, issues and programs. Learning both is a must to integrate all the elements that make up a technological system. The future of a technological system, when plausible, will guide strategic planners in the creation of a roadmap to supplement and enhance the firm or an institution’s strategic plan for short and long term decisions and actions.

TM 225 – Total Quality Management

Framework, tools, and techniques for designing, installing, and improving quality management and quality assurance systems; integrating successful determinants of total quality; research and experiential application of total quality management.

Course Description: The course tackles the concepts and principles of TQM in driving organizational excellence and continuous improvement and learning; as well as the comparison, assessment, and choice of the best methodologies, approaches and practices in implementing TQM, such as:

  • ISO-based QMS
  • Criteria  for Performance  Excellence ( CPE, CMMI )
  • IMS- based  systems ( QMS + EMS + OSHAS )
  • Lean Six Sigma Systems

Further discussed is the analysis and problem-solving in a systematic structured manner using TQM tools and techniques. Appropriate organizational change mechanisms for diffusing innovative technologies  and effecting desired social change are also part of the course. Also taught are continuous improvement action research and management of technology-driven improvement changes.

TM 255 – Legal Issues in Technology Management

Legal and regulatory environment for technology, innovation, and the enforcement of intellectual property rights.

Course Description: An introductory course to (a) intellectual property law (i) the function of intellectual property law,(ii) the principal categories and procedures for obtaining protection of intellectual property: patents,trademarks, copyright and neighboring rights; (b) technology transfer arrangements; and, (c) salient features of special laws which may include the: (i) Cheaper Medicines Act (R.A. 9502); (ii) Invention and Inventors Act of 1992; (iii) Omnibus Investments Code of 1987; (iv) the Technology Transfer Act and pertinent rules. Lectures may discuss the pertinent law on persons, obligations and contracts, civil and criminal procedures as and when needed to help understand and appreciate the practical application of theory.

TM 291 – Management of Technology Programs and Projects

The project management approach as a tool for addressing organizational problems associated with technological innovations; covers such topics as the planning, organizing, and controlling of organizational resources; monetary, manpower, equipment, facilities, materials, and information.

Course Description: The course involves a discussion of principles, methods, and techniques for the effective management of technology-oriented programs and projects. Specific topics include logical framework formulation, project planning, project scheduling, project teams, organization &,project leadership, developing the project budget, project risk management, project procurement management, communication planning, project quality management, project monitoring & evaluation, and change management.

TM 298 – Special Topics in Technology Management: Knowledge Management

Course Description: Knowledge management (KM) is a framework for tracking and managing “soft” assets such as patents and trademarks, business processes and core competencies, skills and practices of people, team and organizational culture, internal and external networks, and databases the intellectual capital of knowledge-based companies. This course introduces the basic concepts and practices of KM. It consists of a variety of learning approaches: readings and lectures, experiential group exercises, online discussions, application of some approaches and tools in the actual workplace, and class reports of learning thereof.

TM 298 – Special Topics in Technology Management: Innovation Management

Course Description: A study of the various forms, types, processes, and models of innovation and of the principles and techniques of innovation management from its strategic aspects to its operational aspects, from the selection to the deployment and globalization of innovation projects, from its intellectual property aspects to its systems and policy aspects.

TM 299 – Special Project in Technology Management

A supervised major project in technology management involving either S&T policy formulation and implementation or technology management decision-making at the enterprise level.

Course Description: The culmination of the program, this course normally commences a successful project in the outside world for graduating students. This is the application of what one has learned during the first 33 units of the program. This is equivalent to a “thesis” in other program offerings.
